Ethyl 408 has physical properties similar to diesel fuel and heating oil and is an attractive oxygenate blendstock.
Stationary engine tests conducted at an internationally known test laboratory have shown that Ethyl 408 is an effective oxygenate when blended into diesel fuel. Blending as little as 5% Ethyl 408 into a base diesel fuel reduces the particulate matter emissions by approximately 50%. The lubricity and conductivity are also improved.
Ethyl 408 also has a low melt point of -36°C and improves the cold flow properties when blended with biodiesel.
In March 2015, the EPA approved Ethyl 408 for use as a diesel fuel additive with a blend concentration limit of 0.25%wt.
