Our products belong to a family of organic molecules collectively referred to as furan-esters. Furans and furan esters have been known as food additives since the early days of chemistry. The World Health Organization (WHO) conducted an extensive study regarding a long list of furan esters as food additives and found them to be safe even at very high level of exposure. The Toxic Use Reduction Institute (TURI) at the University of Massachusetts, conducted an independent Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) evaluation and found the subject 408s to be safe and non-toxic replacement to current solvents. (TURI data link).
To a certain level, anything is hazardous. Too much water or salt can also be construed as hazardous. 408s are intended to replace incumbents with EHS profiles that are orders of magnitude more hazardous and in some cases are not phased out simply due to the lack of alternatives. Until now, that is.
